I have a customer facing role, so one of Hugh’s latest cartoons resonates with me. I also haven’t always been the most well behaved customer myself.
I think a lot of the bad behavior we see in the corporate world is driven by mind-gripping fear. It doesn’t excuse it, but is helps me to reconcile it and helps me do a better job of accepting it and dealing with it.
I’ll never forget the beginning of one of the best, albeit difficult, customer engagements I’ve ever experienced. The customer executive sponsor, in one our first one-on-one meeting, looked over to me, straight in the eye, and said, “You are going to make this work, right?” I think that one sentence says it all.
