Blocked in China?!

Perhaps I’ve been a little to curmudgeonly lately; my blog is reported by the Great Firewall Of China as blocked. Very curious.

I ran across this site in a blog entry by Alec Muffett. His bloggish persona non grata status at least makes some sense, having blogged on a loophole in Google’s controversial censorship mechanisms in its China service.

A preponderance of others commenting Alec’s blog post also report being blocked, and most suppose there are technical issues with the Great Firewall of China test service. Maybe. Perhaps China’s firewall services adhere to the “that which is not explicitly allowed is denied” policy?

The whole thing got me thinking more about freedom of the press on the Web, and led me, as I was looking around, to a story about a journalist in Bangladesh who was briefly detained in the last several days, possibly for a politically controversial blog entry.

Perhaps I will browse more interesting foreign sites, if for no other reason I can, and it seems that many in the world can’t.

Same thing happened to my site. “that which is not explicitly allowed is denied” policy? That comment seems highly plausible as experts predict China will have a lot of problems, obviously, as it tries to control what is said by more than 1 billion people.
