40 Cents a Gigabyte

The imminent arrival of a 3.5″ terabyte drive continues a trend that will increase pressure for more sophisticated storage management solutions at the low end. My office is overrun with unprotected storage, full of things like pictures I’ll backup when I get around to it.

I’m actually considering the purchase of a 160Gb tape drive, but hard drive densities and costs remain generally competitive with the cost of tape media, especially considering all factors. The 5 or so DLT tapes to back up a 1TB drive would be about $150, and this new drive slated to be introduced at around $400. Tape backup also requires software, time and a $1,000 drive. It’s hard to get motivated.

The relatively simple mirroring, RAID and snapshot capabilities of ZFS are looking more and more attractive daily. At least my data would be protected. I guess its time to build a cheap Solaris file server.
