Keep Your Hook in the Water, Any Hook Will Do

Flickr is a wonderful technology. It’s a wonderful example of how technology can enable social interactions that wouldn’t otherwise occur. It also seems to spur, or at least allow us to see, personal talents that would not otherwise be seen or exercised.
One thing that’s at once delightful and disconcerting as you browse the photos is the remarkable talent many people have that you would never know about. The most remarkable folks are producing the photographs that are consistently good, take them all the time, with the least inexpensive digital cameras of all kinds.
My father is a great fisherman. He catches fish when no one else does, and is rarely skunked. At least part of the contrast to my feeble efforts comes from something simple: he doesn’t futz with tackle. His hook is always in the water more than anyone else’s if he is the least interested in fishing. He fishes effectively with the simplest tackle and with simple joy when nothing seems to work for anyone else. Its a simple lesson, but easily forgotten with all the distractions we deal with where fancy technology is involved.
