High Fructose Corn Syrup

Does the Sugar Quota make you Fat? discusses the prevalence of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in our diet. I am also alarmed at how difficult it is to find foods without this ingredient. Examples that might surprise you include:
- salad dressing, including Italian varieties
- low fat yogurt
- any fruit juice “cocktail”
- ketchup
It is difficult to find anything sweet that doesn’t contain HFCS. It wouldn’t surprise me if we find the long term effects of a diet with these kinds of concoctions is at least partly responsible for a host of ills like diabetes and obesity.
There is one thing that might save us: ethanol. If we get serious about energy independence, and the trend to build ethanol plants continue, there won’t be enough corn around to pollute our diets.
